Airports

There are two main international airports in Costa Rica. These airports are:

  • Juan Santamaria International Airport in Alajuela/San Jose
  • Daniel Oduber International Airport in Liberia

There are two other international airports in Costa Rica, but none that are served by the major airlines. There is a fifth international airport in works near the southern region of the country. Government authorities plan on having the airport ready by 2010.

Costa Rica Airport SJO

Juan Santamaria International Airport
Airport Code – SJO

Also referred to as San Jose International, Juan Santamaria International Airport is hands down the nicest airport in Costa Rica. Thanks to the hefty departure tax of $26, SJO is an extremely nice airport inside and out.

There is an information booth on your way out of the airport that is generally manned 24 hours a day. The staff is very helpful with setting up cabs and answering any questions about hotels or transportation.

Daniel Oduber International Airport
Airport Code – LIR

Previously known as Liberia International, Daniel Oduber International Airport is significantly smaller than the SJO airport. There is constant construction going on at this airport to expand it. The new expansions will mean even more arrivals in Costa Rica via Liberia.

The Liberia airport in Costa Rica offers international connections from the US, Canada, and some European and South American countries. There are of course taxis, buses, and car rentals easily available at the airport.
