I spent 4 days in Arenal and 4 weeks in Monteverde and the whole area is magical. Waking up in the morning and seeing a live volcano towering above you really is a unique experience I will never forget.

There is so much to do in the area from excursions, extreme sports, learning Spanish and I took advantage of a lot of them - here are my recommendations.

Monteverde - Night Trek (all hotels will organise)
Monteverde - Zip Lining (again, all hotels will organise bu try and go with the Extreme Zip Line company).
Monteverde - Spanish Language School - fantastic one here (http://www.viaspanish.com/Learn-Spanish-in-Costa-Rica.html)

Arenal - the hike to see the lava - superb!
