Greetings,

Several years ago, on my first trip to Costa Rica, I rented an suv in San Jose and drove to Drake Bay. No problems. The roads were somewhat muddy and there were a few river crossings but the trip was great. There were only two vehicles in Drake Bay at the time, ours and the local police/fire/rescue in a toyota land cruiser. The drive is not for everyone (I drive a toyota land cruiser at home) but can be done. Its was a great adventure. We did the trip in january.
