If you are looking for urban life during your vacation, staying in San Jose is a good idea. You will be close to restaurants, bars, hotels, hostels, museums and shopping centers.

The advantage of hotels is that they are located close to the city center, but you won’t be paying too much for staying in such a location. If you are looking for a quieter area, then stay either in Barrio Amón or Los Yoses. Or head to the suburban areas, located 15-20 minutes from downtown.

San Jose is packed with hostels, most of them located in the city center or close to it. When choosing a place to stay, make sure to check the list of facilities. Some hostels offer free wi-fi, buffet breakfast and towels. Most of them have a common kitchen to use.

You don’t need to sacrifice the privacy either, as many hotels don’t just offer dorms; you can also choose to stay in a private room. Private rooms start at US$12 per person, per night (Pension de la Cuesta), while a bed in a dorm starts at US$8 per night (Castle Tam Hostel).

Costa Rica Travel Guide

The La Lora Hostel of Costa Rica could be just what you want in a hotel, located in the heart of downtown San Antonio de Belen, only a few minutes from Juan Santamaria International Airport. The La Lora Hostel is a brand new family run hostel specifically designed to appeal to the young, as well at those are who also young at heart. Which, needless to say, makes for a positive setting for you and your family. At the La Lora Hostel it’s all about relaxing, having fun, and enjoying the magnificent country that is Costa Rica. It is for these reasons that the La Lora Hostel is such a popular place to stay in the area for budget travelers.

>>Make a reservation today

No matter why you decide to come to Costa Rica, the La Lora Hostel is in a prime location to help you do it all. From extreme eco adventures to learning how to speak spanish, there is something for everyone in the area. With such a great locations one would expect that the La Lora Hostel would be more expensive than it is. But to help keep the hostel aimed at younger travelers and budget savy folks the La Lora Hostel has decided to keep its rates as low as possible.

What is even better than the fact that the hostel is in an area heavy with activity is that the La Lora Hostel is also within walking distance of it all. From restaurants, internet cafes, banks, markets and the taxi and bus station; everything you need is short walk or bike ride away. Its location is one of the things that gives the hostel such an advantage.

At the hostel, you can expect clean and comfortable accommodation, with a friendly and fun family setting. In such a nice and welcoming environment, you can get to know others, make new friends, or even just simply share your experiences with others who are staying at the La Lora. The place isn’t exactly a party hostel, but more for the laid back traveler who enjoys a good conversation and meeting new people rather than meeting new drinking buddies.

One nice feature of the La Lora Hostel is that it has been recently remolded, which is more than I can say for a number of other hostels in the country! The newly remolded hostel creates a nice and peaceful hostel which is perfect for both budget travelers and even traveling families. If you are looking for a nicer, clean hostel in the area, the La Lora Hostel might be just what you are after.

The real selling point to the La Lora Hostel though is its price. If you are a traveler on a tight budget, you can certainly make your vacation dollars go far at the La Lora Hostel. While the dorm rates might be a tad more expensive than other backpacking hostels, it is because the La Lora Hostel is a lot nicer and a lot more private than other hostels. The location of the La Lora Hostel also has a bit to d with its price. Its location allows you to be away from it all, without actually being too far away.

As I said before, the La Lora Hostel is also a great choice for families who are on a budget. More times than not, even though a hostel may provide private rooms, the atmosphere isn’t very child friendly. This isn’t the case with the La Lora Hostel. Because the place only has a limited number of beds, you don’t have to worry about large groups of backpackers and tourists. The private rooms at the La Lora Hostel are also likely to be a lot nicer than private rooms at many of the other hostels in the area.

The owners of the La Lora Hostel and their staff are always around to help offer up advice on the area, directions, and help with tours. no matter what you need, the La Lora Hostel can help!

For help in this decision I present to you Casa Ciudadela located in the vibrant, multi-cultural university town of Heredia, a city that is modernizing while still retaining its colonial charm.

>>Make a reservation

Heredia is an increasingly popular place of study for both natives and foreigners alike and thus, a youthful vibe resonates. Casa Ciudadela is a clean, modern facility perfect for travelers of all types but designed with the student in mind. Many commercial amenities are available within walking distance as are the University and central park. In fact, most everything you will need is within walking distance of Casa Ciudadela.

Upon arrival, you will find that most certainly everything you need for a comfortable stay is provided including linens, complimentary coffee, tea and continental breakfast. The showers will be clean with hot water and the full kitchen facilities will be spotless and ready for your use. Get creative and try that new Costa Rican recipe you’ve learned from the friendly and charming locals. For your security, lockers are provided. So that you don’t lose touch with the outside world, internet access is available (including WiFi for your laptop) and a comfortable common room with cable television is available for use by all. All of this for a very reasonable and fair price.

These prices get even better when combined with tour packages or when a long-term agreement is made. Casa Ciudadela welcomes students that have decided to immerse themselves in the Spanish language and also anyone attending conferences or congresses. Credit cards are accepted though please be sure to alert your company and let them know you will be enjoying the beautiful environs of Costa Rica so that they do not block access to your account. Also, it is common practice for a company to charge a foreign transaction fee for card use. This is not a fee from the hostel and is not in thier control.

Tourist packages include trips to the volcano environs outside of San Jose, including to the volcano itself or if you so desire to the Tabacon Hot Spings and Resort or hot springs in Baldi. There are many other options available if you learn of something else you’d like to see and Casa Ciudadela will be more than glad to assist in any tourist arrangements you need to make.

If you have seen enough of the beautiful countryside of Costa Rica and simply want to enjoy the company of other travelers, Casa Ciudadela is perfect for that as well. And if you and your new found friends decide to wander through the streets of Heredia until the sun comes up, you will be glad to know there is no curfew in place.
If you have decided that you have had enough of Casa Ciudadela and Heredia and are ready to move on to another locale in your journey, our friendly staff will help you arrange all transportation to your points of departure.

Also, if necessary Casa Ciudadela can help you obtain your ticket for you next destination whether it be up the road by bus or to some far off destination by air. The staff at Casa Ciudadela is here to make sure you enjoy your time in Heredia or if you are just stopping by for a night before moving on elsewhere, that you get to where you are going.

What to Expect

Young people such as students and backpackers take advantage of the inexpensive rates that are available at hostels compared to hotels and they seem to fill their needs for some simple lodging, rather than an expensive hotel. The question of how hostels came about is an interesting story. Back in the early 1900’s a teacher and his pupils were caught in a bad thunderstorm and took refugee in a near by barn. The teacher saw the need for people to have a place to rest and you guessed it, the idea for the first hostels were conceived.

Heredia is the perfect place to run a hostel for backpackers, which is what their business is centered around. The city of flowers (Heredia) is a big draw for backpackers that just need a clean, well maintained place to lay over for a few days with mild temperatures all year round. Many people use the Travel Hostel Dreamplace as a stopping off place before heading onto San Jose.

The people that run the Travel Hostel Dreamplace make every effort to see that you will enjoy your stay with them. They realize that people from out of town can use an extra helping hand and they provide maps and information free of charge. There is also a public transportation service desk available. Booking reservations for rental cars and flights are easily handled for you by them, as well. If you place a reservation in advance they will provide transportation to and from the airport. They also take care of currency exchange for you.

Accommodations and Amenities

What a selection of accommodations there are to choose from at Travel Hostel Dreamplace. They rent rooms with four beds and they also offer rooms with eight beds. This is really handy for small groups that may be traveling together. In addition to these options, you can rent private rooms with two beds or a private room with a king size bed.

Some of the other amenities that are part of the service at the Travel Hostel Dreamplace are showering and toilet facilities for both females and males. Bed linen and fresh towels are also included. Storage compartments are available for bikes, surfboards and luggage.

The Travel Hostel Dreamplace offers two common areas. One is a lovely outdoor terraced area and the other is an indoor common area. Both areas are ideal for chatting with new people that you meet there or you can take care of your Internet needs in either area, because they accommodate you with WiFi. If you want some entertainment, the indoor common area also provides cable TV.

There isn’t much that the folks over at the Travel Hostel Dreamplace have not included to meet all of your needs. The hostel is wheelchair accessible to all. It comes complete with a café restaurant for casual dining. They have made arrangement for a smoking and non-smoking zones. While your staying there you can take advantage of the washing machine, dryer and security lockers.

What you probably didn’t know about this hostel, is that there is no curfew at the Travel Hostel Dreamplace. There staff is available 24 hours a day and you can feel free to come and go as you please, which is great for young people. Many hostels do actually enforce a curfew and this is one requirement that you may want to keep in mind when your shopping around for a hostel that will work for your particular needs. Travel Hostel Dreamplace, just about gives you all the comforts of home at an inexpensive price.

The weather is tropical and balmy. For anyone traveling light, a bikini will see you through most of your stay. Activities abound for visitors interested in hiking, beach games, kayaking, fishing and horseback riding. Jaco also prides itself in its exciting nightlife. One of the great pluses to visiting Jaco is the large choice of hotels. For convenience, comfort and price, the Hotel De Haan, a hostel conveniently located an hour and a half from the airport, tops the list. Visitors agree that it definitely lives up to its motto, “where nobody is a stranger, just friends that have not met yet!”

>>Make a Reservation Today!

What to Expect

The Hotel De Haan provides hostel accommodations starting at $10.00 a night. In these economically strapped times, such a bargain is more than welcome. Credit cards are accepted. Check-in at the De Haan is from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Private parking is available for the duration of the stay. Unlike some hostels, the De Haan provides twenty-four-hour front desk and security service. There is no curfew, which is good, since the fun usually continues around the clock.

The De Haan opened in 2001 and provides a Costa Rican atmosphere along with, thanks to its Dutch owner, a touch of warm Dutch hospitality. The spectacular surf at the De Haan’s front door makes it a popular venue for college students on vacation and backpackers on a budget. They are there to surf and party, and there is plenty of both. For beginners, surfing lessons are available. American students should take note of Costa Rica’s strict drug laws. Best to get high on wind and surf.

The De Haan is located in the center of Jaco, next to local bars, casinos and discotheques. There is an activity for everyone, and the fun continues long into the night. For more serious business, bank and medical facilities are nearby.

Accommodation and Amenities

Guest can stay in one of the hostel’s four large dorm-style rooms or one of the eight private rooms. The décor is simple, clean and comfortable. The private rooms are small, but come with private bath. There is plenty of hot water for all, which is not always the case in Costa Rica. Regular towels and bedding are provided. Guests need to bring their own large beach towels, however. Air conditioning can be bought as an option. Amenities include laundry, ceiling fans, internet and WiFi. Storage lockers are also available, an important consideration for anyone concerned about the safety of his or her valuables in a communal living environment. Guest can enjoy a lovely swimming pool with Jacuzzi. There is a CD player by the pool. All guests need to do is bring their favorite CDs. Can the party be far away? Of course, the beach is a mere fifty meters from the building, so the choice may be a bit difficult.

Breakfast is not included in the hostel’s rates, but shared cooking facilities are available. The kitchen is located on an outdoor balcony. Who minds cooking with the fresh ocean breeze mixing with delicious cooking odors? Anyone looking to save even more money beyond the hostel’s already reasonable rates would do well to share the cooking and food costs with other guests. It’s an almost guaranteed way to make new friends.

The people at the front desk are friendly, helpful, and chockful of information about local sights and tours.

If you’re planning a vacation to Costa Rica, the Hotel De Haan is well-worth looking into. Inexpensive, filled with amenities and conveniently located, it’s a hard bargain to beat.

But, there are plenty of ones that aren’t worth going to. I have visited just about all of the best hostels in San Jose over the last few months. Below is a small, but growing list of the top hotels in San Jose for budget backpackers.

Tranquillo Backpackers

This has to be my favorite backpacking hostel in all of San Jose. It is the perfect blend of party hostel and relaxing hostel. The use of the phrase party hostel might be a bit much. The atmosphere here is upbeat and musics fills the air until the 11:00 quite time hour. The staff here is super friendly and willing to help you with cabs, directions, and even order food. The hostel is large and offers a variety of dorms and single rooms. Each night comes with a free community movie, coffee, tea, and a pancake breakfast.

>>Make a reservation now

Costa Rica Backpackers

If Tranquillo Backpackers is full, my next choice is always Costa Rica Backpackers. This hostel is much more laid back and quiet. It is a bit further from downtown San Jose, but nothing a short cab ride or 15 minute walk can’t fix. The staff here is hit or miss. Some of theme are extremely nice and helpful, while others could really care less about you. There are a handful of community computers here, a pool, and large community kitchen. There are plenty of dorms and private rooms to go around. They also play movies nightly and have a restaurant on site.

>>Make a reservation now

Hostel Pangea

My full review of Hostel Pangea
While I am not a big fan of this hostel, that is not to say that it isn’t a good one. If you are looking for a hip party hostel, this is the place for you. The hostel is huge and filled with trppy murals lining the walls and walkways of the hostel. There is a full blown dance club on the roof. next to the dance club you can find a full service bar and restaurant. There are also dozens of computers thrown out across the hostel. The staff here is nice enough, but the hostel is run more like a hotel so they are not as laid back and nice about checking out late, using the computers after check out, and other silly stuff.
