Arenal Waterfall

Arenal Waterfall - La Fortuna
Arenal Waterfall
Just outside the city of La Fortuna is the Arenal Waterfall Park. A visit to the Arenal Waterfall Park is a great way to spend the day in the La Fortuna area. Many visitors spend the first half of the day at the Arenal Waterfall Park, then make their way to Tabacon Hot Springs to relax, and finish off the day with volcano watching. This is a full days worth of activities, but the Arenal Waterfall Park alone is still a great half days worth of adventure travel.

Tranquillo Backpackers - San Jose

Tranquillo Backpackers - Check Dates
Tranquillo Backpackers
Most hostels in the San Jose area fall under one of these categories: party hostel or laid back hostel. Tranquillo Backpackers is a nice combination of the two. The building itself is a huge, old building, in the San Jose area about 20 minutes from the airport.

Volcano and Hot Springs Budget Tour

springs.jpgWalk anywhere in La Fortuna and you’ll see and abundance of tours available. Anything from guided waterfall hikes to lava flow tours. One of the most popular tours in the area is some sort of lava and hot springs combination tour. Since there are a number of hot spring parks in the area, these tours can range in price from moderate to expensive.

Tranquillo Backpackers - Mal Pais

The Tranquillo Backpackers hostel in Mal Pais is by far the best place to stay in this small beach town. I don’t know if id go so far as to call Tranquillo Backpackers a party hostel, but there is usually a heavy amount of drinking going on every night. The hostel is pretty well known as a surf hostel and as such, half of the guests are usually surfers. For those of you who wish to retire early or aren’t into the party scene, security guards try to do their best to enforce the “quiet time” rule.

Costa Rica Backpackers

cr-backapckers.jpgCosta Rica Backpackers - Check Dates

Truly a chill hostel, Costa Rica Backpackers is a great stop in San Jose for first time travelers to Costa Rica. The hostel has a very laid back vibe, but is popular and large enough to attract a large and mixed crowd of travelers. Make Costa Rica Backpackers your first stop from the airport and you are sure to meet other travelers with tons of helpful hints and great travel suggestions.

The Strangler Fig Tree

Strangler Fig by UltrahiIn Santa Elena, a small town near Monte Verde, is one of the coolest attractions in all of Costa Rica. The best part about this super secret adventure, its free. This “attraction” isn’t so much of an attraction as it is a dead tree. Yes, a dead tree is one of the coolest things to see in Costa Rica, to find out why, you’ll have to keep reading.

Maleku Hostel

maleku.jpgThe Maleku Hostel is one of the nicer hostels close to the airport. Only about 10 minutes away from the airport in San Jose, the Maleku Hostel is perfect for those looking for a short, overnight stay in San Jose or a place to spend the night before they leave the country.

Pension Santa Elena

There are a number of decent budget accommodation’s in the mountain town of Santa Elena, Pension Santa Elena is by far my favorite. They may not have the nicest rooms or a wealth of amenities, but what they do have is an outstanding staff and a great atmosphere.

Hostel Pangea

Hostel Pangea - Check Dates

If ever there were a party hostel, Hostel Pangea would be it. How you can you not be party hostel when you have a roof top bar and a dance club? Party hostel it may be, but it is probably one of the most efficiently run hostels in Costa Rica. A well educated and very bi-lingual staff run the hostel like a well oiled machine (most of the time, anyways). Better still, they have a reservation system that actually works and not some poorly designed email reservation system or pen and pad system.

Arenal Backpackers Resort

arenal.jpgArenal Backpackers Resort - Check Dates
(More photos at bottom of post)

Backpackers and resort, theres two words that you don’t usually put together. Dont let the name full you, Arenal Backpackers Resort is definitely priced for budget travelers. As the name would suggest though, the hostel is filled with luxuries that most backpackers will find quite exotic.
