Being the ecological hot spot that Costa Rica is, there is no shortage of amazing things to see and do. In fact, the only real problem with Costa Rica is that there is too much to see and do. Short of backpacking around the country for several months, there is almost no way to see everything Costa Rica has to offer. For this very reason, many travelers look to organized tours to help them maximize their time abroad. The Costa Rica Explorer Tour is one such tour.

There’s a great little “island” to jump off of in Puerto Viejo. It’s probably the most fun thing to do there, and also the least known. We had done it three times in one week, and when we took the owner of Rocking J’s out with us, it was his first time. I think we started a trend.
If I mention Puerto Viejo a lot its because I absolutly love this Costa Rica city. So much so that I will be moving there in March 2008! A while back I wrote a basic city guide about Puerto Viejo de Limon. The guide covers the basics of where to eat, sleep, etc. This guide is more about what there is to do in the city of Puerto Viejo and how to make the most of it.

La Paz Waterfall Gardens - 1 hour North of San Jose

If you are stuck in San Jose you may find yourself bored very quickly. Short of some night clubs and a ton of museums, there isn’t much to do in the city. If you have an entire day to kill, I would suggest looking into a trip to the La Paz Waterfall Gardens. The Waterfall Gardens are filled with animals, great views, hiking, and tons of waterfalls.
Next to zip lines and canopy tours, whitewater rafting is one of the most popular adventure travel activities in Costa Rica. Once you’ve biked and hiked your way to any of the many secluded beaches in Mazanillo, it’s time to break out your snorkel and mask. There is decent snorkeling at any of the beaches here. Although it’s not the greatest snorkeling in the world, it’s still a fun way to spend the day. There are tons of small damsel fish, crabs all over the place, and if you’re lucky, you may see an eel or lobster.
