Maybe Im just a sheltered American, but until the first time I visited Costa Rica, I had never made an international call. Needless to say, I was baffled by the combination of country codes, area codes, and the pay phones in general in Costa Rica. To make the entire situation even more complicated, standard calling cards wont work in Costa Rica.

Another option is an international cell phones.

How to make a international call from Costa Rica

  1. First you will need to buy a calling card from inside Costa Rica. These can be picked up just about anywhere for various amounts.
  2. Dial 00
  3. Dial the country code (USA is 1)
  4. Dial the area code
  5. Dial the phone number

Another option is an international cell phones.

Use skype to make your international phone calls. All you have to do is setup an account (very hassle free) and that’s it. SOme internet places have the required headset and mic for this option, but I would suggest packing your on. THey offer them on their website for a decent price. (www.skype.com) I think skype is the most cost efficient way to talk to your friend and family from pretty much anywhere that has a computer/internet hookup. Check out Manuel Antonio it’s got it all…Pura Vida!
