Surf Shop

At the surf shop, you can rent or buy a board, or sign up for surfing lessons. Get a short three hour session with a local instructor for ten bucks, or pay for a full day of surfing including renting the board for only twenty bucks! Your instructor will meet with you in the morning before your lessons to assess your skills and needs as a surfer and develop a lesson for that day. So no matter if you are a beginner or if you have surfed for awhile but still would like some pointers, the Totem Hotel’s Surf Shack is the place to go! They have all kinds of boards, including Banzaii, Premiere, and RRD surfboards. And, if you are really worried as a first time surfer, you can even purchase insurance on your board rental.

Accommodations and Amenities

There are twelve basic hotel rooms at the Totem Hotel Resort, each with a queen size bed and great view of the a tropical garden. Each room is really colorful with Carribbean style painted walls, original artwork, and handcrafted bamboo furniture. There are also two junior suites and six larges beach front suites available. The suites each have a spacious living room seperate from the bedrooms, as well as private balconies. All the rooms have cable television, a coffee maker and a mini refrigerator. There are rooms that are wheelchair accessible and that are equipped for disabled as well. But the best part is that from each of these rooms, you can hear the crashing of the ocean waves!

Each night you stay at the Totem Hotel Resort includes a free breakfast, and the food is really good! You get coffee, tea, juice, fresh bread, ham, cheese, fruits and dishes with eggs and potatoes. The hotel also has 24 hour security, wireless internet, security boxes, laundry facitilities, a swimming pool, and a jacuzzi! There is also billards and a ping pong table, and you can even rent a bike from the Totem Hotel.

Also, the food at the Totem Hotel Resort is amazing! The Mediterraneo restaraunt has a large terrace that overlooks the ocean, making it such a great place to eat! This Italian restaraunt is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and everything on the menu is homemade! They have delicious bread, pasta, flat bread, as well as desserts such as tiramisu and fruit flavored ice creams. It is shocking to find such delicious Italian cuisine in the middle of Costa Rica, but the owners are originally from Italy. There is also a beach bar called Ostería. It has Italian cuisine with a Latin American twist. You can get pasta, as well as seafood such as shrimp, crab, and lobster.

When you go into Puerto Viejo, which is not far at all from the Totem Hotel Resort, there is a huge variety of activities available including surfing, hiking to waterfalls, snorkeling, dolphins watch, scuba diving, and canopy tours. There is even a great little local market that is only a ten minute walk from the hotel. The market is a great place to get all the supplies you might want to stock your mini-fridge with, including milk, snacks, bottled water, and champagne. The white sand beaches are gorgeous, and the Carribbean flavor of the Totem Hotel Resort makes it extra festive and fun.
