If you are looking for a fun way to spend your day, but don’t have much money to spend, I recommend taking a bike ride down to Manzanillo. For about $20 US you can rent a bike and have a picnic on a secluded beach.

This 14 mile bike ride is a nice way to get out of the touristy part of Puerto Viejo. Once you are about 5 minutes from town, there is nothing but lush green jungles, private homes, and a number of private ecological reserves.

The ride is relatively flat, with only one or two small hills. About half the way to Manzanillo, there is a tree on the right side of the road, about 40 feet back, that is usually full of howler monkeys. If you forget to look for them, you will more than likely hear them! They are very hard to miss. It’s amazing how loud these little guys get.

Once you get to Manzanillo, make sure you lock your bike up to a tree before you wonder off. Once you’re in Manzanillo, there are a few things to do. There’s a bar and restaurant, nice beaches, a path through the jungle, and some good snorkeling.
